This Thursday, Mrs. Bentley’s class will be presenting their annual music production. This year, they will be performing a show called “Broadway Beat.” One focus Mrs. Bentley covers in her classroom with the third graders involves communities. Broadway is a wonderful community of artists and performers and gives the students the chance to consider the word “community” in a new setting. We have discussed a little bit about the history of Broadway, some key “players” in the community (directors, producers, actors, dancers, etc), in order to better understand what we are performing.

This fun musical features several songs from many hit musicals including Wicked, Hairspray & Grease. The students have learned to sing seven different songs as well as dance to a few of them! In addition to the musical numbers, the show features dialogue that keeps the show moving, but also helps educate the students and audience a bit about Broadway and each of the shows featured. Stay tuned for some pictures and student reflections on their experience. It’s been so much fun to work on this project!

Sixth grade in front of the orchestra pit

On Wednesday, October 19th, the sixth graders took part in a field trip to tour the backstage areas of the Lyric Opera of Chicago.  Among the highlights of the trip were:

  • Sitting in different parts of the theater to experience different views
  • Looking in on the orchestra pit and learning about how the conductor and singers communicate during performances
  • Seeing the stage from the perpective of a performer, crew member, or stage director
  • Handling actual props and weaponry used in Lyric Opera productions
  • Walking the “catwalk” suspended six stories above the stage
  • Touring the costume & make-up/wig departments
  • Seeing the dressing rooms for chorus and lead actors in the opera productions
  • Trying on actual costume pieces from productions at Lyric Opera
  • Learning about what it takes to produce and perform an opera, bothin Chicago and other places around the world.

Overall, it was a great, educational day for the class.  Enjoy some snapshots of our time downtown below!

The first and second graders have begun rehearsals for their annual music class performance.  This year, I worked with Mrs. Kramer and Mrs. Barnett to select a show that would connect to the curriculum they use in their classrooms.  After looking through the options available for this age group, we agreed it would be fun and useful to prepare “The Turkeys Go On Strike.”  The performance features fun dialogue and songs based on actual facts about the history of the Thanksgiving holiday.

The students have had a lot of fun learning the music so far.  Each song is written in a different style, which allows me the chance to talk about the many genres of music that exist.  The songs also give me a chance to talk about basic rhythmic elements that the students are familiar with and can identify through listening and following along on the sheet music.

The classes will be performing together on Wednesday, November 9th at 6:30 p.m. in the school gym.  Hope too see you there!

Welcome!  This is the new home for updates and what's happening in the music room at Bannockburn School.  I am excited about this new opportunity to share all of the news from general music classes and band and chorus throughout the year.  I think it's great that you will all get the opportunity to be regularly informed about what your students are doing and learning in my classroom.

I encourage you to visit often and leave comments.  I appreciate your participation in this new endeavor!

Musically Yours,

Mrs. Ciko
