Science!

We have been having a great time being back in science. We spent the first few days learning more information on chicks and their eggs and life cycles. We are now learning about the weather. It is the perfect time of year for it!

Do not worry…the cracked eggs are not the chicks!

Gardening

First grade took over one of the beds in our courtyard garden.  We planted spinach, lettuce, radishes, and carrots.  We also have potato plants from last year that are at the end of our bed.  We are hoping to add the potato plants we have been growing all year to them soon!  We LOVE our courtyard!

Field Trips

We had two wonderful last field trips in First Grade.

Going to Prairie Crossing Learning Farm was a wonderful experience.  It correlated so well with both our math and science units.  We were able to see a working farm and how it was set up, while gaining new knowledge about chicks.  We learned so much about what it was like to be a chicken farmer.

We also loved going to the Little Red School House.  I was so impressed with the class and the knowledge they had remembered from our social studies unit of learning about school long ago.  It was fascinating for the class to see in person all that we had learned about.

Thank you so much to our parent volunteers for helping us!

CHICKS!

Whew!  We have been so busy making sure each of our final days together are spent to their fullest.  Therefore, we have not had time to blog in class!  I will make an attempt to catch everyone up over a few posts!

We were thrilled to pieces when our chicks hatched.  We thought they were going to arrive last Sunday night or Monday.  We were worried when we got to school on Tuesday to find that there were still no chicks yet.  Finally, sometime during Tuesday morning we began hearing peeping from the incubator.  We were so excited when one of the chicks used it’s egg tooth to make a small hole.  We spent Tuesday and Wednesday in suspense as the chicks hatched one by one.

Once all of the chicks had hatched (we had a few that did not) they were moved to their brooding box.  From there, we held them and got to see them up close.  It was a wonderful experience for us and we can not wait to do it again next year!

Independent Study Project – April

FANTASTIC job to our friends that completed Independent Study Projects for the month of April.  The theme was space.  May will be our last month for projects.  We have been so impressed by them!
